About Sheregesh Ski Resort Nature Preservation Zone

Situated in the Kemerovo Oblast of Siberia, the Sheregesh Ski Resort Nature Preservation Zone envelops the iconic Mount Zelenaya and its surrounding landscapes, ensuring preservation of the rich Siberian taiga environment amid one of Russia’s most renowned winter sports hubs. Characterized by dense coniferous forests of Siberian pine and fir, this protected area supports diverse wildlife including Siberian roe deer, foxes, and various bird species adapted to cold climates. The region experiences long, snowy winters from November through April, facilitating a ski season famed for reliable snow quality and deep powder. Historically, Sheregesh developed from a small mining settlement into a major alpine skiing destination during the late 20th century; environmental protection efforts intensified to balance growing tourism with nature conservation. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake in skiing and snowboarding on over 50 marked slopes with varying difficulty levels, cross-country skiing on forest trails, as well as snowshoe hiking to experience the pristine Siberian wilderness. In summer, the area offers hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife observation opportunities amid tranquil green landscapes and crystal-clear mountain streams. Notable landmarks include the panoramic summit of Mount Zelenaya accessible by gondola and chairlifts, where visitors enjoy sweeping vistas of the Kuznetsk Alatau mountain range. The Nature Preservation Zone both safeguards important natural habitats and enhances visitor experiences by mitigating ecological impacts, maintaining trail networks, and promoting sustainable tourism. As one of Siberia’s premier alpine destinations, this zone attracts thousands yearly seeking exhilarating snow sports and authentic encounters with Siberian nature.
